City of Long Life So Changed the City of Cancer
Nov 16, 2011 Health
Shandong, China, A city in eastern Shandong province of China known as the ‘city of long life’ because many elderly residents of long-lived. But the city has now turned the nickname into the ‘city of cancer’.
The city can nicknamed ‘cancer city’ since many deaths from cancer occurred over the last 3 years in more than 30 villages. The victims who died was believed to have fallen ill from cancer after inhaling toxic compounds from chemicals illegally dumped by the industry.
“The incidence of cancer is several times higher than normal and has happened in some villages in Laizhou. Laizhou is the county town in Shandong province, “said a doctor in Yantai, a coastal city in Laizhou as reported from ShanghaiDaily on Wednesday (11/16/2011).
Residents claimed to have closed the eyes and nose with a wet towel when you sleep so as not to smell the chemical. “The smell of this powerful chemical has been inhaled for 8 years,” said one resident in the village of Haicangyi.
The smell of chemicals are claimed to have been caused, among others:
1. Eye irritation
2. Nasal irritation
3. Throat irritation, which can make the residents of choking at night
“The smell of chemicals are quite toxic, because the contaminated gas phenol, which is derived from waste agricultural chemicals. The smell of these chemicals has led to respiratory cancer, cancer blood, and liver cancer, “said an expert on environmental protection in Yantai newspaper.
Keyuan Factory Shandong Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. and Laizhou Tengfei Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., both located near the village of the accused has caused pollution. Both of these chemical plants are reported to have produced 2, 4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D), but without a license or permit.
Compounds 2, 4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D) is systemic herbicides or pesticides are commonly used to control leafy weeds. The most widely used herbicide in the world and become the third most common herbicides used in North America.
Herbicide is a synthetic auxin which is a plant hormone and is therefore often used in laboratories for the study of plants and as a supplement in plant cell culture media such as MS medium.
The Qu Jaingsheng and CEO of Shandong Keyuan has admitted it does produce pesticides but refused to take responsibility for the incidence of cancer that occurs in many villages.
“I have been in the chemical industry for over 30 years, but until now I am still very healthy. It is normal for a chemical factory illegally dumped the waste water and chemicals have caused the smell, just like the restaurant,” he said.
However, according to an employee of Shandong Keyuan unnamed, chemical plant that was never processed but direct chemical waste dumped in the nearby Gulf of Laizhou.
“The villagers said they had received 700 yuan (U.S. $ 110) for one year in compensation from the chemical plant, under the command of Tushan City government, “said the villagers.

Cause Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Patients Decreased Memory
Nov 15, 2011 Health
, Memory problems and other disorders often accompanies chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. There is controversy about the causes decline in memory, whether disease itself, hormonal blockade or chemotherapy drugs that cause memory decline.
The results showed that, the area the brain involved in planning, attention and memory performance decreased in patients with breast cancer who had undergone chemotherapy than in patients with breast cancer who did not undergo chemotherapy.
The study has been published in the Archives of Neurology issue for November 2011 . “The results of such research is important to find ways to manage side effects of chemotherapy,” researchers said as quoted by Shelli Kesler MSNHealth, Tuesday (11/15/2011).
But according to Michelle Janelsins of James P Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, New York, many women complain about the problem. But when it conducted the test, then the results are included in the normal range on tests of subjective.
“It will provide more information about what actually happened so it can develop a better management approach,” explained Janelsins.
chemo brain is a neurological and cognitive problems most frequently reported in patients with breast cancer who had received chemotherapy. Much research has been devoted to chemo brain, but have not found a way to alleviate the condition.
The researchers compared the results of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) conducted on 25 women with breast cancer who have received chemotherapy, 19 women with breast cancer who did not undergo chemotherapy, and 18 healthy women.
“The women are doing a card sorting task designed to measure problem-solving skills and also reported their own perceptions of their cognitive abilities . Women with breast cancer, both of which have undergone chemotherapy or who have not, showed reduced activity in two regions of the prefrontal cortex. One area of the prefrontal cortex is involved in memory, “the researchers said.
Group who did not undergo chemotherapy did show some changes in the brain, but the actual performance of cognitive tasks is not impaired. Group who had undergone chemotherapy also had reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex and tend to repeat errors and accomplish tasks more slowly than the other two groups. The worse the disease , the lower the activity in the prefrontal cortex.
There are several hypotheses about why chemotherapy can cause problems. One is that the chemotherapy is toxic to neural stem cells.
In addition, that chemotherapy increases the amount of inflammation in the body, which then enters the brain, and chemotherapy also causes DNA damage. Hormone therapy can also affect cognitive function. Individual variations in estrogen levels may have influenced the study results.
Although the results of these studies showed a relationship between brain function and chemotherapy, but it did not prove a causal relationship.

Fibre and Grains Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer
Nov 13, 2011 Health
, Eating fiber and whole grains has long been known to help protect themselves from disease cardiovascular. Not unexpectedly, food, fiber and whole grains can also reduce the risk of colon cancer.
According to a new study, eating more cereal and whole grains can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer (colon). The researchers from Imperial College London found that every increase of 10 grams of fiber intake in one day, there will be a reduced risk of colon cancer by 10 percent.
This study is somewhat different from the analysis in 25 previous studies that found that fiber fruits and vegetables does not reduce risk of colon cancer. Latest review the results of this study have been published in the British Medical Journal .
/> Grains include foods such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, cereal, oatmeal and porridge. From the analysis the researchers found that, there is a linear relationship between dietary fiber and colon cancer.
“intake of fiber in an amount sufficient to have some benefits,” says Dagfinn Aune, one of the researchers from the department of epidemiology and Biostatistics at Imperial College London, as reported from BBCNewsHealth, Sunday (11/13/2011).
Adding three servings (90 g per day) of grains in the daily diet can lower colon cancer risk by 20 percent.
“A previous study has shown a reduced risk of colon cancer because of high intake of fruits and vegetables. It shows that, other compounds from the fiber in fruits and vegetables may explain the mechanism. The health benefits of increasing fiber intake of whole grains and are not limited to benefits for colon cancer only. It also tends to reduce the risk of disease heart (cardiovascular), type 2 diabetes, and mortality due to obesity, “the researchers said.
“We recommend that the daily balanced diet of high fiber foods such as grains, cereals fruit and vegetables to reduce the risk of colon cancer,” said Mark Flannagan, chief executive of Beating Bowel Cancer.
But according to Yinka Ebo of Cancer Research UK, eating lots of fiber is just one of many things that can be done to reduce the risk of disease .
“It must also be done in conjunction with maintaining a healthy weight, be physically active, reducing alcohol, red meat, and not smoking. wheat products should be made more attractive to buyers,” says Prof. Anne Tjonneland of Danish Cancer Society.
Results were considered to be very useful for a healthy diet recommendations daily. However, it still needs to be done several studies to clarify the quantity and type of fiber that must be consumed to reduce the risk of colon cancer.
