Cataracts World’s First Drug Found
Oct 14, 2011 Health
, Cataract is a disease eye lens of the eye characterized by a cloudy and foggy. The normal eye lens is transparent in color and contains a lot of water so that light can penetrate easily. The lens is not cloudy can not forward the light onto the retina to be processed by the visual nerve to the brain.
To date, there is no drug that can prevent or cure cataracts. The only treatment is to dissect the cloudy lens and replaced with a synthetic lens.
Cataract is the cause of blindness in the world with more than half of victims aged 65 years and over. Cataracts in children are very rare, the probability is approximately 3 cases compared to 10,000 children.
But now, scientists from the University of Adelaide in Australia for the first time discovered a revolutionary treatment that can prevent eye lens opacities gradually . Testing of new compounds that collaborated with drug companies Therapeutics calpain has been shown to significantly slow the progression of cataracts.
“By using these drugs at early stages, the development of cataracts can be slowed so disease is not will actually grow more severe, “said Professor Andrew Abell, chairman of the inventors of the drug that has been working on this project for ten years.
Currently, surgery to remove cataract procedure lasted for 30-45 minutes. With the use glasses, about 95 percent of patients who had surgery reported normal vision immediately.
“Our drug can be either drops or creams are used to the eyes every night before bed. Through a routine eye examination, the doctor eye can see the early stages of cataract formation before the person know they have cataracts. Once detected, the patient can start using our drug to slow the progression of cataract, “said Dr. Tim Lovell, CEO of calpain Therapeutics
” We know that if someone has a cataract in one eye, chances are the other eye will also be affected. Delaying the onset of cataract in one eye has been diagnosed with cataracts may slow growth for a while, “imbu Dr. Lovell.
As released dailymail , Friday (10/14/2011), this drug will be crowned as one of five finalists of the business plan competition The University of Queensland Business School’s Enterprize.

Salt Can Make Like Cigarettes and Drug Addiction
Oct 11, 2011 Health
Melbourne, As with cigarettes and drugs, salt was also able to make people addicted. Research shows salt, cigarettes and drugs stimulate the same brain regions.
This finding may explain why many people are so difficult to reduce salt intake, although there are warnings about the dangers of high blood pressure and heart health.
Researchers from Australia and the United States found that the salt can trigger genes, brain cells and brain connections similar to that done by tobacco and illicit drugs.
“In this study we have shown that one of the classic instinct ‘starvation’ of salt, providing organizations the same nerves as the addiction to opiates (opium) and cocaine, “said Prof Derek Denton of the University of Melbourne, as reported by Timeofindia , Tuesday (11/10/2011).
According to Professor Denton, when people eat salty foods then the brain cells to make proteins more than usual, just as happens when the brain is addicted to heroin, cocaine and nicotine.
The study also revealed that after eating the salt of the brain will believe it has to repair the body properly after the previous ‘starvation’ of salt. In other words, the changes caused by the ‘lust’ salt disappeared before the salt can leave the gut, enters the blood and reach the brain.
“It is amazing to see the gene that gives a chance ‘off’ when the loss of sodium (salt) suddenly returned to the initial state in just a few minutes, “explained Prof. Denton.
The results of this study have been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
previous studies also found that foods containing salt will continue to stimulate the brain so that dopamine will light up and make someone kept thinking about those foods that will lead to addiction to food.
Additionally taste senses humans do crave salty foods from time to time, so more sugar and salt you eat, the desire to constantly eat is also getting stronger. These conditions as well as someone who is addicted to nicotine in cigarettes.
If you think this addiction continuously appear then can lead to obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension). Such diseases are known to cause various complications.
For that community is expected to start to reduce intake of sugar and salt gradually, for example by avoiding eating in front of the television that makes a person become overeating and reduce stress.
