, A gene was found to lead to one type of cancer but on the other hand can be deadly types of cancer. The gene is a gene androgen (AR) that if the amount is less able to kill breast cancer patients but if a high number of prostate cancer triggers.
This discovery not only provides a clear example of how the uniqueness of the genetics underlying a particular type of cancer, but also showed that different cancers will require different approaches.
The discovery by a team of researchers from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, led by Charis Eng, MD, PhD, is revealing the effects of a single gene that ‘two-faced ‘against prostate cancer and breast cancer.
The gene is called is called the androgen receptor (AR) is found in breast and prostate cancer. In prostate cancer, the higher the AR gene promotes cancer growth. Whereas in breast cancer, the lack of AR gene will lead to the spread of cancer.
According to the researchers, these findings help explain why breast cancer tends to be more risky in women after menopause and why the most common therapy for prostate cancer is by blocking AR. When the menopause, the production of AR in women decreased.
“Until now, the effect of duplicity is very unusual,” said Charis Eng who is also Chairman of the Institute of Genomic Medicine. He interprets these findings to the optimistic. According to him, after the facts are known, different cancers will be treated specifically and effectively.
Eng said that this team’s findings have important implications for the future of health care based on genetics. Their findings indicate that treatment should be given more personalized based on sex and the affected tissue.
“You can imagine that breast cancer patients with low levels of AR that was causing the cancer to get worse, so that will make the therapist gives AR back and improve patient health, “said Charis Eng io9.com as reported, on Wednesday (10/19/2011).
